Host differential sets

1 / 1

Naktuinbouw can supply seeds of the following host differential sets:

For lettuce - Bremia lactucae

For spinach -  Peronospora effusa

For cabbage - Plasmodiophora brassicae

  • 4 host differentials
  • 1 unit = 200 seeds per host differential

What is a host differential set?

Host differential sets consist of plant varieties or lines with different, well-characterized plant disease resistances. Ideally, all resistances that are relevant in the market are represented separately. Host differential sets lay the foundation for harmonization of resistance claims.

The virulence pattern of pathogen isolates may be investigated by using a host differential set. Investigation of virulence patterns may be necessary to validate a resistance test, or to investigate whether an unknown isolate belongs to a known race.

An extended list of host differential sets used in resistance breeding can be found on the website of the International Seed Federation. Also, resistance terminology is explained on this website.

What is the importance of host differential sets?

Host differential sets are the key to breeding progress for the benefit of society.

Who can order host differential sets?

Any organisation that is involved in resistance testing or in monitoring of new isolates can order seeds of host differential sets at Naktuinbouw.

The differential sets are propagated by seed companies in collaboration with Naktuinbouw and Plantum. Seeds of host differentials are supplied free of charge. In return, we expect the implementation of ISF resistance terminology and feedback about monitoring.

Although there are practical restrictions on the amount of seeds, any request will receive serious consideration. A standard MUA belongs to the normal procedure. Phytosanitary restrictions may apply to the import of seeds, depending on national legislation.
