Company Hygiene for Vegetable and Ornamental Crops

Prevention is better than cure... Good company hygiene in a way of prevention is therefore crucial for companies that produce propagating material for vegetable and ornamental crops. One of the important reasons is the reduced risk of the spread of pathogens.

For over 15 years, Naktuinbouw is organizing a training for Company Hygiene for Vegetable and Ornamental Crops. This course will help plant and seed propagators, how to set up and maintain company hygiene. Also applicable for quality assurance systems, e.g. based on the principles established in NAFI, ELITE and GSPP standards and requirements.

Starting date: go to: Inspection and sampling training

Target group

This training course has been specifically developed for staff members who manage, supervise, instruct and/or monitor non-managerial staff (daily staff) such as production leads, foremen, cultivation coordinators and site managers in vegetable and/or ornamental nurseries and seed companies.

Program

A mixture of theoretical introductions and practical cases, exercises, assignments and discussions. The course will be given in English on bachelor science level.

Subjects:

  • Life and spread of pests and diseases, including detection (e.g. crop monitoring) and determination (e.g. detection kits as well as insight in the testing facilities);
  • Content of a hygiene protocol, facing 4 threats: people, materials, starting material and water;
  • Disinfection means and prevention of those 4 threats;
  • Conducting risk assessments, including establishing control measures;
  • Implementation of the hygienic measures in relevant procedures (agreements within the company)
  • Implementation of the company hygiene system in hygienic locks (access in the production area as well as the daily activities).

They will learn how to recognize symptoms and which control measures need to be implemented, if any suspected plants are detected in the greenhouses and/or production. The basic principles of company hygiene will also be explained, whereby good site management and risk assessments are part of the curriculum. Participants will be taught how to critically assess situations in daily practice . These skills can then be used to implement in daily practise or to motivate their colleagues to work according to the hygiene protocol.
