New Seed Extract (SE-PCR) tests for hemp and alfalfa

Publicationdate: 14 december 2023

We are introducing a new real-time RT-PCR to test the presence or absence of Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) on seed of hemp and alfalfa.

For this test, the fast, reliable and sensitive Seed-Extract PCR method has been selected.

The (real-time) PCR is a technique for rapid amplification of DNA.

This is done with the help of pathogen-specific building blocks. The increase in DNA can be monitored digitally at any time. This makes it possible to faster and with more certainty confirm whether the seed samples actually contain the pathogen.

Viruses

Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), an Alfamovirus that causes major problems in a large group of host plants worldwide where hemp and alfalfa also belong to. Because the virus is very easily transmissible, the risk of spreading is high. Other crops where the virus also causes problems include potatoes, peas, tomatoes and tobacco.

  •  AMV on seed of hemp or alfalfa
    • Sample size: 3,000 untreated seeds
    • Test fee: € 207
    • Duration basic test: 4 days

For basic fees see price list.

Naktuinbouw Laboratories support sector

To support the sector, Naktuinbouw Laboratories continues to develop new tests that can support diagnosis on plants with symptoms and seeds or, on the other hand, check and guarantee freedom from certain viruses.
