New SE-PCR-tests for zucchini seeds

Publicationdate:

From April 1, we can test for the presence or absence of harmful Pseudomonas syringae strains in zucchini seeds that may cause Vein clearing of zucchini (VCZ). This test is carried out using the rapid, reliable and sensitive seed extract PCR method.

The (real-time) PCR is a technique for rapid amplification of DNA

This is done with the help of pathogen-specific building blocks. The increase in DNA can be monitored digitally at any time. This makes it possible to faster and with more certainty confirm whether the seed samples actually contain the pathogen.

Bacteria

Earlier, it was thought that Pseudomonas syringae pv. peponis was the cause of VCZ. We now know that multiple species within the Pseudomonas syringae complex are responsible for VCZ.
Pseudomonas syringae pv. peponis is an outdated name that is no longer used due to new scientific insights.

VCZ is a contagious and seed‑borne disease. It can cause severe damage to young zucchini plants, especially during cold and wet conditions. Symptoms include water‑soaked spots that later become necrotic, stunted growth in seedlings, and a significant reduction in productivity.

The test

Vein clearing of zucchini (VCZ) on zucchini seeds:

  • Sample size:  1,000 untreated seeds
  • Test fee:  € 346,50
  • Duration test 4 days

For basic fees see our price list.

Health, Testing & Analysis support sector

To support the sector, Health Testing & Analysis continues to develop new tests that can support diagnoses on plants and seeds with symptoms or just checking for and guaranteeing absence from certain plant pathogens.
