International DNA project helps improve tomato variety selection

Publicationdate:

Naktuinbouw, together with European research stations, is launching a new international project. The aim is to create an online DNA database that will allow European organizations involved in plant breeders’ rights research to add, compare, and share harmonized DNA profiles of tomato varieties.

These profiles are based on the harmonized and validated SNP set developed in the previous global tomato project. This new project builds on that foundation, with the laboratories of the research stations for Breeders’ Rights using the set. This ensures the reliability of the data.

The database supports selection and collaboration

The database will have features for visualization and reporting. Each year, new varieties will be added. This supports DUS research (Distinctness, Uniformity, and Stability). “By working together and sharing data, we avoid duplication of work and improve the quality of research,” says Michel Ebskamp – unit manager Identity & Quality.

The project is supported by European organisations

The project receives financial support from the CPVO (Community Plant Variety Office) and the Board for Plant Varieties. Euroseeds participates as an observer to protect the interests of breeders. The official start, with a kick-off, is scheduled for early 2026, once the grant agreement has been signed.

The project is now in the development phase

Ebskamp states: “We have started with a so-called ‘proof-of-concept’. Partners are testing the SNP set and adding new profiles to the database. We are also working on the legal framework and making agreements about data sharing and the rules involved.”
