Cooperation between Suriname and the Netherlands strengthens the seed sector

Publicationdate:

The Makandra project brings together Surinamese partners, Wageningen University & Research, and Naktuinbouw. They successfully completed the project and are focusing on improving the quality of plant propagation material in Suriname.

National Seed Plan and New Legislation

One of the main results is the development of a National Seed Plan and a draft law for seed quality and Plant Breeders’ Rights. The Surinamese parliament is currently considering this law. This will create a legal basis for variety protection and certification. The National Seed Council (NZR) and the Seed Inspection Service are responsible for carrying out these tasks.

Training and Knowledge Transfer

Surinamese experts attended training at Naktuinbouw in the Netherlands to expand their knowledge. In Suriname, Naktuinbouw organized a train-the-trainer workshop. The 30 participants assessed crops such as cassava, sweet potato, passion fruit, and rice according to UPOV guidelines.

“A well-functioning system to stimulate breeding and ensure quality control is essential to give farmers access to reliable and improved propagation material. Through training and cooperation, we can lay the foundation for sustainable agriculture and economic growth,” says Rinette Soeropawiro of NZR.

Gene Bank and Sector Analysis

The project group advises setting up a national gene bank. This will help preserve local varieties and strengthen climate adaptation. A sector analysis mapped the diversity of seed systems and led to recommendations for import regulation, variety development, and quality control.

Outlook

With the Makandra project, the partners are taking an important step towards a modern and resilient seed system in Suriname.
