New PCR-test for Xanthomonas in Anthurium plants

News publication date: 26 November 2021

Naktuinbouw has developed a new PCR-test for detection of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. dieffenbachiae (X.a.die.) in leaf material of Anthurium. This bacterial disease causes leaf spots and blight in Anthurium and in some cases plant decay. Naktuinbouw developed the test in cooperation with Wageningen University and Research.

Anthuriums

Using the new method larger batches of leaves can be tested, also larger series can be run at the same time. Starting December 1st this test will be part of the test portfolio. The PCR will replace the immunofluorescence (IF) assay. Since IF is laborious, it will cease to be part of our portfolio per 1 January 2022.

Sample

The PCR can be carried out directly on leaf material. The chances for detection will increase if a part of the petiole is included in the sample.

A sample may consist of 1 or 2 leaves (plant sample) or 50 leaves (lot sample).
