New seed extract PCR tests for Cucurbitacea, pepper and New Zealand spinach seeds

Starting September 1st, we can test for the presence or absence of Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) on seed of Cucurbitaceae and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) on pepper and New Zealand spinach seeds. For this test is chosen to use the fast, reliable and sensitive seed-extract PCR method as test method.

The (real-time) PCR is a technique for rapid amplification of DNA 

This is done with the help of pathogen-specific building blocks. The increase in DNA can be monitored digitally at any time. This makes it possible to faster and with more certainty confirm whether the seed samples actually contain the pathogen. 

About the viruses 

Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) 

CMV is a Cucumovirus that can infect over 850 plant species worldwide, including pepper and New Zealand spinach. The virus is mainly spread by aphids, but can also be transmitted via seeds and mechanical contact. In Europe, CMV is classified as a Regulated Non-Quarantine Pest (RNQP), which means seeds must be tested for this virus before use. 

Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) 

PRSV is a Potyvirus that causes significant damage to plant production worldwide. It primarily infects papaya and plants from the Cucurbitaceae family. The virus is spread by aphids. In countries such as Egypt, Bahrain, and Jordan, PRSV is listed on the EPPO A2 list, meaning it is considered a quarantine pathogen. Therefore, seed testing is mandatory for export to these countries.
