Testing Laboratory has new test Verticillium spp. on cabbage and lettuce seeds

The sector has a great need to determine the presence or absence of Verticillium spp. on cabbage and lettuce seeds. Therefor Naktuinbouw has developed a new test for this. We are already doing this test for spinach seeds. This test is a traditional blotter method.


Verticillium spp. and their host plants

The triggers of Verticillium Wilt on cabbage are V. dahliae and V. longisporum. For lettuce, only V. dahliae is known as the trigger.

In no case seed has been proven to be the source of infection. Still a number of countries have quarantine import requirements for cabbage and lettuce seeds. Especially in the United States (California) is Verticillium a major problem in cabbage and lettuce cultivation.
