New: Seed extract PCR for tobamovirus ToMMV

News publication date: 15 June 2020

The laboratory has a new real-time PCR test for detecting Tomato Mottle Mosaic Virus (ToMMV) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) and eggplant seeds (Solanum melongena). This is a relatively new tobamovirus with potentially very harmful effects on these crops.

The virus was first detected in Mexico in 2013 and subsequently found in China, America, Spain and Israel. ToMMV is possibly spread to new regions through seed, just like other tobamoviruses. Tobamoviruses are easily transmitted via contact (mechanical) and are therefore highly contagious.

Naktuinbouw is offering the new SE-PCR test both separately and in combination with the closely related Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit virus (ToBRFV) and Pospiviroids.

In order to meet the specific country requirements such as those in Australia, you can request this test from Naktuinbouw for samples of 20,000 seeds.

  • Sample: 20,000 untreated seeds
  • Fees:*
    • separate test ToMMV: €2,279.60
    • In combination with ToBRFV and Pospiviroids: € 3,218.40
  • Duration of the test: 3 days

*These are the test fees. For the standard fees, please refer to the price list 2020.
