Naktuinbouw stops with pre-denomination testing as per 1 January 2021

News publication date: 02 November 2020

Naktuinbouw will stop testing pre-denominations as per 1 January 2021. Each applicant has access to the denomination test module in the CPVO Variety Finder, the central variety name database of CPVO. Each applicant can therefore check whether a variety name may be objectionable. That is one of the reasons why we are discontinuing this service.

CPVO Variety Finder for every applicant

When this service was started, there was no central variety name database, such as the CPVO Variety Finder. It was logical that Naktuinbouw would offer this service. Nowadays the CPVO Variety Finder is available and every applicant has access to the denomination test module in the CPVO Variety Finder. Each applicant can therefore check whether a denomination may be objectionable.

Naktuinbouw and CPVO recommendations regularly differ

In addition, CPVO gives no advice on pre-denominations. The CPVO only gives advice on officially submitted variety names. For this reason, it happens regularly that a pre-denomination which was initially approved by Naktuinbouw, later turned out to be objectionable. We think this is an undesirable and inefficient working method. In our opinion we can no longer provide an adequate service in conducting pre-denomination tests.
